A short trip to the Negev desert in spring is mandatory, if only to bring all of us stiff-necks back to our roots in the days of Pharoah. That patch of green you see out the window is about as lush as it gets around Shivta, the ancient Nabatean city which is thought to be a rest station on the famous Incense Route between Avdat and lovely Gaza on the Sea.

Now as then, in turbulent times the desert (where nothing ever happens, really) is the supreme location for those seeking clarity — a ruthless testing ground where doubt becomes a stranger. The desert opens itself up to us like a window on the soul, and our most profound thought is worth only a laugh, at best.

Chag Pesach Sameach and a Happy Spring to all! May the season bring sweet recreation, keen perception and the laughter of lucidness.
