The summer of 2011 will be remembered as the genesis of a broad popular awakening to the sorry state of Israel's once-enviable social agenda. Saturday night in Tel Aviv saw the largest single demonstration in Israeli history (over 300,000 people) demanding that elected leaders devise practical assistance for the young and heavily-burdened working class, particularly by creating affordable housing.

As they say, only in Israel: An insane collection of banner-waving Socialists, students, high tech engineers, working class poor, pensioners, artists, Greenpeace activists, disenfranchised ethnic minorities, Rainbow coalition members and Boy Scout troops, tightly interwoven in impossible street corner circles to shout their improbable dreams of social justice at each other. A good time was had by all.

For some odd reason, only the Government didn't show up.
