Zen Tractor in Snow. Copyright © Bob Rosenbaum 2001
The magic of the New Year is expressed best to me in a blanket of fresh snow, where
all is suddenly spanking new, even an old tractor. This photograph was made in the heart
of the Catskill mountains of upstate New York, on the grounds of the Zen Mountain Monastery,
not far from where I lived during a sabbatical period in 2001. Following a snowfall I would
grab my camera and creep through those woods and fields as softly as possible, drinking in the
awesome quiet wrapped in crisp clean air, and making a supreme effort not to leave stray tracks
behind me. I still pause sometimes in my busy life to ask, like the proverbial Buddhist monk,
'Is the red tractor still sitting in the mountain snow?'
