JOE FARRELL QUARTET – LIGHTHOUSE TAPES – 1981
  • This recording of saxophonist and flutist Joe Farrell and his Quartet at the Lighthouse is from the closing night of that legendary jazz club in March 1981.
  • The evening is full of amazing energy and some beautiful moments, with Joe, pianist George Cables, bassist Bob Magnusson and drummer Peter Erskine. This is easily among Joe's best California-based ensembles, with all players in fine form. It was all captured on tape for a radio broadcast which never materialized.

  • The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, California, served as the venue for dozens of extraordinarily good live jazz recordings from the 1950s through the ’70s. Though it was re-opened in the summer of '81 as the upscale 'Lighthouse Cafe', it never returned to its exceptional prominence in jazz music history.
